Mian Nawaz Sharif the leader of his own faction of the Pakistan Muslim League was hosted by the PBC members over dinner on Monday, December 19th, 2011 in Karachi. The meeting held at the request of Mr. Nawaz Sharif was used by him as an opportunity to share with the PBC members his vision for economic development of Pakistan and to hear the views of the PBC members on the urgent steps required to jump start the national economy.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Asad Umar, Chairman of the Pakistan Business Council thanked Mr. Sharif for taking the time out to meet with the PBC members and also for the support extended by the PML (N) Chief in endorsing the PBC’s National Economic Agenda (NEA). Mr. Umar reminded the audience that the PBC’s NEA which had the support of all the major political parties covered five areas i.e. Energy, Macroeconomic Stability, Social Protection, Education and Regional Trade. Mr Umar stressed the need for tackling the energy crisis as this was in his view the number one issue facing Pakistan.
Replying to Mr. Asad Umar’s opening remarks, Mr. Sharif presented his party’s 12 point agenda on energy; according to him the PML (N)’s energy agenda included among other things a better utilization of the existing sources of energy as well as a shift towards the use of domestic sources for power generation including coal and renewable sources. On regional trade Mr. Sharif emphasized the need for better relations with India and of his desire to make Pakistan the regional energy trading hub. Mr. Sharif also reiterated his party’s view that all loss making public sector enterprises must the privatized; he cited the successful privatization of MCB & HBL which had been initiated during his tenure as prime minister.
Mr. Bashir Ali Mohammad, Mr. Hussain Dawood, Mr. Asif Jooma, Mr. Iqbal Lakhani, Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Mr. Khalid Mahmood, Mr. Arif Habib & Mr. Kamran Y Mirza spoke on behalf of the PBC. Other prominent PBC members who attended the meeting included Mr. Ehsan Malik, Mr. Waqar Malik, Mr. Saquib Shirazi, Mr. Atif Bokhari, Mr. Salman Burney, Mr. Sultan Allana, Mian Abdullah & Mr. Shabbir Diwan. Mr. Sharif’s entourage included Mr. Ahsan Iqbal, Mr. Mamoon Hussain and Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbassi as well as several sitting members of the National Assembly from Punjab & Baluchistan.
