A delegation of the Pakistan Business Council (PBC) met the Trade Counselors’ of the EU countries based in Islamabad on May 10th, 2012 The PBC delegation headed by Mr. Bashir Ali Mohammad included Mian Umar Mansha, Mr. Yousuf Abdullah and Mr. Samir S. Amir Director Research at PBC. The PBC delegation stressed upon the Trade Counselors’ the need for greater market access to the EU for Pakistani exports.
Mr. Bashir Ali Mohammad stated on the occasion that Pakistan was passing through difficult economic times and it was looking towards its friends for support. He expressed concern that the EU was in the process of fast tracking an FTA with India while refusing to allow Pakistani exports a level playing field in the EU.
Mr. Alexandre Borges Gomes the First Counselor for the EU Delegation in Pakistan assured the PBC members’ of the EU Delegation in Pakistan’s support in helping Pakistan get GSP Plus status for its exports starting from January 2014. He however suggested that the PBC should lobby with the Government of Pakistan to appoint a dedicated point person from the government side so that the formalities for filing the GSP Plus application can be completed in a timely manner.
In the end Mr. Bashir Ali Mohammad recalled that this meeting was a follow-up to the PBC’s meeting with the EU Ambassador to Pakistan in November 2011. He further thanked the Trade Counselors’ for their time and hoped that the PBC & the Trade Counselors’ would continue to work together to increase trade relations between Pakistan and the EU.
