Shamsh Kassim Lakha Made Honorary PBC Member

Mr. Shamsh Kassim Lakha has formally accepted the invitation of the PBC Board to become an Honorary Member of the Organization. Individuals with outstanding contributions in their respective fields are routinely invited by the PBC to become honorary members for a period of one year which is extendable by mutual consent. In addition to Mr. Lakha, the other PBC honorary members are; Dr. Ishrat Husain, Dean & Director of the IBA Karachi and a former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Syed Salim Raza, former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and founder CEO of the PBC and Syed Shabbar Zaidi, Partner, A. F. Ferguson & Co and member of the Revenue Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Finance.

While inviting Mr. Shamsh Kassim Lakha to become an honorary member, the PBC board acknowledged his contributions in the field of education in Pakistan and especially his contribution as the head of the Pakistan Economic Forum Committee (PEF) on Education which helped develop the PBC Position Paper on Education.

Mr. Lakha is the Founding President of the Aga Khan University, the first private university chartered in South Asia. He led the planning, building and operation of this internationally renowned institution for 27 years in seven countries of Asia, Africa and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Shamsh K. Lakha served as Pakistan’s Minister of Education as well as Science and Technology in the Caretaker Government in 2007-8. He chairs the board of Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy and sits on the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) as well as on the board of International Baccalaureate Organization. Mr. Lakha is a member of the board of Benazir Income Support Programme, Pakistan’s largest poverty reduction initiative. He was elected to the Steering Committee of the Talloires Network of 270 universities worldwide, involved in civic engagement and based at Tufts University. He is Senior Distinguished Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto and consults for the World Bank and Grameen Bank. He has written several book chapters and articles on school and higher education, higher education reforms as well as on philanthropy.
